According to the latest reports, as of late June, Singapore reported a total of more than 14000 cases of dengue fever in 2020, resulting in 16 deaths. The country has had more than 1000 new cases of dengue fever in several weeks, which is another major public health ordeal after the COVID-19 in this crowded, developed city-state. The number of new cases of dengue fever in Singapore in a single week has reached an all-time high. The previous high record was in 2014, when there were as many as 891 new cases in a single week, but now the number has raised up to 1468. In response to the surge quantity in cases, the Singapore government has stepped up epidemic prevention measures to eliminate potential Aedes albopictus breeding habitats in public places and residential areas. Why is the situation got worse this year? Singapore experts believe that one of the main reasons for the surge in dengue cases this year is the emergence of an unusual strain of dengue virus. In addition, some experts in Singapore believe that some prevention and control measures taken against the COVID-19 epidemic have also accelerated the spread of dengue virus. They believe that residents have to stay at home for a long time because of the COVID-19 epidemic, which provides an opportunity for Aedes albopictus to gather “blood” and reproduce.

What is dengue and how is it treated?

Being transmitted by Aedes albopictus, so the epidemic has certain seasonality, which is usually, from May to November every year, and the peak is from July to September. In the new endemic areas, the population is generally susceptible, but the disease is mainly in adults. And in endemic areas, the disease is mainly in children. About 50 million to 100 million people worldwide are infected with dengue virus every year and causing about 20000 deaths. It should be noted that this figure is not the data of the past two years, but has been there all the time. The dengue virus lives in the patient's blood for 2 to 7 days, so it can be transmitted to others through mosquito bites during this period. The most common clinical symptoms of dengue fever are sudden high fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes and rash. There are also some common respiratory symptoms, including cough, sore throat and runny nose. Severe patients can lead to fatal bleeding and shock.

Up till now, there is no vaccine available in China, and foreign vaccines are mainly used in endemic areas to avoid re-infection of dengue virus. We may take below preventive measures of dengue fever to prevent and treat dengue virus:

2.    Improving the hygienic environment, cutting off the route of transmission;

3.    Early detection of patients and taking anti-mosquito isolation treatment measures;

4.   General treatment of acute period should be bed rest, given liquid or semi-fluid diet. Stay with anti-mosquito equipment in the ward isolated until the complete antipyretic. Do not prematurely go to the ground to do some actives until the disease getting better;

5.    Keep skin and mouth clean;

6.    Mosquitoes should be killed immediately around the hospital, and medical staff should prevent being bitten by mosquitoes.

No matter what challenges we face, as long as we work together, we will certainly be able to overcome them. Let’s start from ourselves, maintain hygiene habit; do mosquito prevention and control; take plant essential oil with us, which can help us prevent from mosquito in time when needed. Wish we all own the health and beatific life.
